The Big Barge
The art gallery, housed in a restored old barge showcases original local artworks made from flotsam and jetsam washed up by the tradewinds and currents.
Owner and local artist Emma Washer restored the Big Barge - the former ferry connecting West and Home Island - over a 10 year period. The colourful barge now hosts and sells a unique collection of local art including paintings, photo canvases, textiles, carvings and jewellery.
The family-friendly location offers a playing-ground for the little ones while the deck in front of the Big Barge invites you to just sit back and relax while enjoying the stunning views of the Indian Ocean.
Inspiring creative workshops are run here and encompass a diverse range of art experiences including printing, flotsam and jetsam mixed media, coiling, weaving, drawing and environmental art.
Throughout the year, the Big Barge organises outdoor movie screening. Watch a movie under the Cocos Keeling Islands stars while the waves are quietly breaking in the background. Make sure to check the blackboard at the Cocos Club for any movie screenings while you are on the island.
The Big Barge is also available as a venue for hire. With stunning views out to the Indian Ocean and surrounded by a lush coconut grove, this space is the perfect setting for festivals, live music, weddings or private functions.
