Directions Island beachPrison Island with GeofWalking Inger vandyke

There are 27 coral islands making up the Cocos Keeling group, and each one is beckoning you to explore it.

Whether you are seeking solitude on an uninhabited island, or peace to relax on the white sands of a deserted beach, you'll find a serenity and simplicity rare in this modern world.

If you prefer something more active, like glimpsing seabirds taking an island break on their epic ocean journeys, or immersing yourself in the unique Cocos Malay culture of Home Island, or just mixing with the locals at iconic events, then there is an island just for you.

The local ferry can take you on the short trips between West, Home and Direction Islands, or join one of the many tours that can take you to other islands of the atoll. Details are available at the Visitor Centre on West Island.

Covered in overgrown palm plantations, cabbage bush and other endemic plant varieties, the islands are criss-crossed with tracks and trails just asking to be investigated. The shores are either pure white sand, rocky reef or lagoon flats, so bring sturdy walking shoes if you like to beachcomb.

Atoll walk

The Cocos Keeling Islands offer a rare experience available nowhere else in the world. The horseshoe-shaped atoll encloses a lagoon that is remarkably shallow at low tide. Keen visitors can walk the entire atoll at certain times - making this is the only atoll in the world where such a walk is possible. Planning and preparation are required, please talk to the Visitor Centre for more information.
