The Buff-banded rail (Gallirllus phillppensis andrewsi) is the only endemic bird of the Cocos Keeling Islands and it is only found on Pulu Keeling National Park.
On the other islands in the Cocos group you are more likely to see birds in flight rather than nesting. Most common are the Red-footed booby bird, Common noddy, White tern, Frigate bird, Rufus night heron, Eastern reef egret and several species of waders. Many of the birds seen are 'vagrant species', that is birds who have travelled far from their normal homes, even from as far away as China!
Approximately 60 species of birds have been recorded on the Cocos Keeling Islands.
